Background

The training of Psychiatric Clinical Officers (PCO’s) began in Uganda in 1979 in line with the Government Health Policy of training for primary Health Care delivery.

Initially, the training targeted Registered Psychiatric Nurses, who then were provided with specialised clinical training in an effort to impart them with the knowledge and skills to bridge the gap created by inadequate number of Psychiatrists in the Mental Health Service delivery at all levels in the country.

Location

The School of Psychiatric Clinical Officers is located in the central region of the Southern part of the country in Kampala District.

It is 9kms from Kampala city centre in Nakawa Division and Mutungo Parish,Butabika Hospital Village.

Future Plans

Expand the school’s infrastructure
Attract more candidates with in the region to train in this programme.
Maintain the international linkages with East London NH Trust UK and USA and uphold the collaboration established.
Affliation to Mbarara University of Science and Technology-CAHMS.
