The training of Psychiatric Clinical Officers (PCO’s) began in Uganda in 1979 in line with the Government Health Policy of training for primary Health Care delivery.
Initially, the training targeted Registered Psychiatric Nurses, who then were provided with specialised clinical training in an effort to impart them with the knowledge and skills to bridge the gap created by inadequate number of Psychiatrists in the Mental Health Service delivery at all levels in the country.
A psychiatric clinical officer of a health professional specially trained in the promotion of mental Health, assessment, diagnosis, Management, prevention of mental health problems and in the rehabilitation of the mentally ill in the community and established mental health institutions.

To be Tertiary Institution that develops competent Mental Health Professional in the region.
